As I strolled down the quintessentially English streets of London, wrapped in a coat that’s more ‘survival gear’ than ‘fashion statement’, I couldn’t help but reflect on my journey here. You see, for three years, my life oscillated like a metronome between South Africa and London. But here I am, officially a Londoner, trading the perpetual summer of Johannesburg for the romantic, albeit frosty, embrace of London’s winter.
The streets tell a story. One of change, of seasons passing, and of new beginnings. The Christmas trees that once stood proud and bright in every home, now lay abandoned by the curbside, stripped of their sparkling glory. A tad morose, I agree, but isn’t it emblematic of life? One moment you’re the belle of the ball, and the next, you’re last season’s forgotten trend.
This ‘out with the old, in with the new’ mantra doesn’t just apply to the pine trees lining the streets. It resonates deeply with me. My life in London is a series of new beginnings, of closets scattered across continents – a pair of heels in Cape Town, a beloved dress in Guernsey, and now, a growing collection of winter wear in London. Each item, a story, a memory, a piece of a life lived in transit.
And speaking of new additions, let’s not forget the latest members of our little London family. Our two fur babies. Just when my partner and I thought we had our hands full, we introduced a new puppy into the mix. You’d think adding to the chaos would be a recipe for disaster, but somehow, it’s brought a sense of completeness to our home. It’s like finding that missing piece of a puzzle you didn’t know you were assembling. As we watch them play, frolicking around with the innocence and enthusiasm only puppies have, I can’t help but think about how they symbolize our new life here. Full of energy, new challenges, and unbridled joy.
So, as I watch the old Christmas trees of yesteryear wither away and make room for new growth, I’m reminded of the beauty in letting go. In shedding the old to make way for the new. As a South African now calling London home, I realize that the essence of life is change. And as much as I miss the African sun, I’m learning to dance in the London rain, embracing the new chapters, and the new closets, life has in store.
After all, isn’t life about collecting stories, not just things? As these London streets become increasingly familiar, I find myself not just walking on them but leaving a part of my story with each step. And maybe, just maybe, that’s the magic of new beginnings.
Hey there, fellow adventurers! It's your favourite South African girl here, feeling like a dandelion in the wind, just waiting to see where the breeze will carry me next. My wandering spirit has taken me on some wild and exhilarating journeys, and I'm here to share my experiences with you all. So buckle up and get ready for a ride through shark-infested waters, daring horse jumps, and snow-capped mountain peaks.
My dandelion soul craves the thrill of the unknown, and one of the craziest experiences I've had so far is skinny-dipping in the moonlit waters of a secluded beach. I'll never forget the adrenaline rush and sense of freedom that came with diving into the waves, leaving all my inhibitions behind.
Shark diving off the coast of South Africa was another heart-pounding adventure that I'll always cherish. Seeing these magnificent creatures up close and personal made me feel so alive and connected to the natural world. And let's not forget my adventures in horse jumping! There's nothing quite like the exhilaration of soaring through the air on the back of a powerful, graceful animal.
But my dandelion soul isn't just about adrenaline-pumping escapades. I've also had the chance to embark on peaceful mountain climbing expeditions and kayak journeys through serene landscapes. Hiking the Swiss Alps and exploring the lush wilderness of the South African bush have been transformative experiences, allowing me to truly connect with nature and find solace in its beauty.
My wanderlust has also led me to urban jungle adventures, like sipping coffee in Antwerp while soaking up the city's bustling atmosphere. These moments, while seemingly mundane, are just as essential to my journey as the more daring exploits.
Throughout all of these experiences, I've come to live by the 3 C's of a Dandelion Soul: Choices, Chances, and Changes. I've learned to make the choice to step outside of my comfort zone, take a chance on the unknown, and embrace the changes that come along with it.
When I decided to embark on a scuba diving adventure in Sodwana, I faced my fears head-on and discovered a magical underwater world. When I chose to hike the Swiss Alps, I pushed my body to new limits and discovered just how strong I am. And when I stopped to sip coffee in Antwerp, I took the time to appreciate the beauty of the everyday moments that make life so special.
So, to all of you fellow dandelion souls out there, I encourage you to embrace the 3 C's and let the wind carry you to new, exciting places. Make a choice to take a chance and change your life. You never know where your next adventure might take you, and that's the beauty of it all.
Until next time, happy adventuring!
Your South African girl with a dandelion soul
