Next to Mother was a gentleman quite a bit older that has been travelling all across Africa for years. An interesting man filled with stories of adventure. Some even seemed too good to be true. There was a gentleman sitting in the corner at the bar watching everyone. Next to my love was an African head of education in some political system and her daughter. They told us all about the nerve-wracking experience they had earlier taking Instagram photos at Deadly Devil’s Pool. The daughter told us how she kept slipping but her mother insisted that she needs the photo for Instagram. There was also a Russian couple on honeymoon. We sighed with relief when they went into another cabin with a few posh British people. If they had come to sit next to us there might have been a murder. They were downright unpleasant and we suspected they had Covid. Mother and I had enough. Earlier in the day they were constantly coughing on us ignoring all the polite rules of society and we were ready for war. Then there was the well-dressed, well-spoken crew that told us more about the train and announced our dinner.

The sight of the thundering waterfall framed by a rainbow was a moment I’ll never forget. The monkeys chasing us around was another unforgettable experience for different reasons. At this point, they stopped the train and we were able to get off and watch the waterfall on one side of the bridge and the sunset on the other side of the bridge. The bridge is literally the bridge between Zimbabwe and Zambia. Mother made eye contact with one of the local craft salespeople and she was soon lost in a sea of people who wanted to show her their local hand-crafted products. I managed my way to the front of the train. The drivers pulled me into the hot steam room and I got to blow the horn of the train.

To be honest, I could have easily had another. I think I actually stole a bite from my partner’s plate.

The Russians took full advantage of this perk. We dined well.

The train’s loop come to an end and we had to bid the train bon voyage. The Russians were on our bus back to Zambia enjoyed their drinking on the train too much and stayed longer than they should have which made that we almost did not cross the Zambia border back into Zimbabwe in time. That almost caused murder on the bus ride back, but once we came back to the hotel everyone was friends again and happy to have a drink together.
